PARKINSON'S DISEASE NURSE - JOB DESCRIPTION

The Parkinson?s Association of Ireland (PAI) is a charity based in
Dublin with branches throughout the Republic of Ireland. Our aims
include:

* To help and support people living with Parkinson?s and carers by
developing a support network of branches throughout the country.
* To make information available to people living with Parkinson?s
and their families through seminars, newsletters and branch meetings
on both a national and local level.
* To facilitate easy access to all appropriate services for people
with Parkinson's and to lobby to improve those services.
* To help establish a network of Parkinson?s Disease Nurse
Specialists, within a multidisciplinary setting, each in association
with a neurologist and/or a geriatrician.
* To promote and encourage research into Parkinson's.

We do this through educating the public and raising awareness. We
fundraise to help provide essential services, ultimately throughout
the country. Currently our primary push is to finance the provision of
Parkinson?s Nurse Specialists, ideally working in association with
neurologists or geriatricians, based in the community.?

and their families. To identify and provide for the needs of our
members within the Association. To advocate for improved services and
represent our members as one unified voice.

_An exciting opportunity has come up for the right person to work as a
Parkinson's Nurse Specialist with the PAI._

We are looking for an enthusiastic, forward thinking nurse who has an
interest in Parkinson's and Neurology who is experienced in offering
phone support, delivering local branch support and developing the
existing service.

We need you to be able to work autonomously, be confident running
?members information clinics independently and have experience of
community services with good integrated working skills

_Probationary Period_

This post will be subject to a probationary period.

_QUALIFICATIONS_

* _Registered in the General Division by An Bord Altranais_
* _Higher Diploma in Parkinson?s care or equivalent_
* _Previous experience in developing programmes in a community
setting _
* _Experience working in the community and with not-for-profit
sector._

_Role Purpose_

The PD Nurse Specialist is an administrator, leader, manager,
collaborator practitioner, educator and researcher. The PDN in
Parkinson?s management will provide social, psychological, and
educational support on how to manage Parkinson?s for patients and
their families.

The post holder will work as an integral member of the PAI team with
responsibility for developing the service.?The primary focus of the
post will be to provide education, Parkinson?s training and advice
on Parkinson?s management to persons? living with Parkinson?s
disease, their relatives and carers, and the wider community to ensure
their ability to manage all aspects of their PD with the aim of
facilitating self-care where possible.?

_Responsibilities_

The PD Nurse Specialist is required to provide expertise in the
management of PD to those in the hospital setting and the
community.?The role is educational and advisory with the aim of
providing specialist advice to the person with PD, their carers and
also training for health professionals.?The role involves working
with other disciplines to promote healthier lifestyles and to prevent
complications associated with PD.

_Direct Care_

* To manage a defined patient caseload, working unsupervised at times
and under the direction of the PAI board, using specialist
Parkinson?s nursing skills to assess the needs of the person and to
plan, implement, document and evaluate care.
* Provision of support for the PAI branch structure.
* Prioritise the needs of the newly diagnosed person with PD.
* Design and implement teaching sessions based on individual
patient?s assessments of needs
* Develop a therapeutic relationship with patient and family and
actively involve them in their treatment
* Assess their understanding of their diagnosis and its implications
* Teach the person and their families about the specific therapies
relevant to PD
* To participate in the provision of psychological care for people
with PD and their families.
* To provide a service that is e_vidence based and which aims to
improve quality of life for patients with PD._

_Indirect Care_

* To act as an expert resource and to provide highly specialised
advice about diagnosis and management of PD to other health
professionals.
* To work closely with other members of the PAI team, attend team
meeting and ensure effective communication between professionals to
benefit the service.
* Provision of telephone service during working hours.
* Ensure patients have follow up calls.
* In conjunction with other members of the service develop
protocols, standards, guidelines and documentation systems to promote
best practice.
* To keep statistics on patients care and to submit reports as
requested.
* Maintain high professional standards and acceptable protocols and
national legislation.
* Regular review of service
