Position: Technician - Soil Fertility & Nutrient Response in Grass &

Basic Function and Background to the Role:

This Research Technician position affiliated with the Farm
Sustainability Tools for Efficient Nitrogen use (FaSTEN) research
project. FaSTEN will develop new knowledge to improve nutrient use
efficiency on farms thus reducing potential nitrogen (N) losses to
water and gaseous emissions to the environment. As part of FaSTEN, the
Research Technician will work with the dynamic project team (including
partners at Teagasc, University College Dublin and Waterford Institute
of Technology) to investigate different soil, environment and
management factors affecting soil nutrient supply and nutrient
recovery by different grass sward types and cereal crops. The primary
role of this post will be help establish and maintain laboratory,
microcosm and field based research studies on fertiliser recovery and
nutrient dynamics in soil, grass & crops (in conjunction with the
project researchers). The research technician will collect soil,
plant, water and gas samples from these experiments and prepare them
for analysis in the laboratory. They will also keep records of their
work in field sites and laboratory notebooks and help to input the
data collected into computer databases. The research technician will
also support Teagasc to maintain high levels of health and safety as
they conduct their work.

Job Objectives

?Assist with field sampling and operation of field equipment.

?Assist with laboratory preparation and analyses of collected field
samples with adherence to good laboratory practice and quality
assurance.

?Contribute to the management of samples, equipment and consumables.

?Contribute to troubleshooting to optimise existing
protocols/develop new protocols.

?Ensure that equipment and facilities are operating at the highest
level of efficiency.

?Contribute to the teamwork and team-spirit in the
agri-environmental research department at Johnstown Castle and to
foster and add to further collaboration and integration.

?Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety
Duties as may be assigned from time to time.

OFFER REQUIREMENTS

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Person Specification

Essential

Candidates must have a Level 6 qualification in agricultural science,
soil science, environmental science or a related discipline.

Full EU Driving Licence.

Desirable

Postgraduate training and/or research experience in physical
sciences/nutrient cycling in agricultural systems would be a distinct
advantage.
