DETAILS OF SERVICE

Alcohol is a significant contributor to most health conditions and
places a particular burden on hospital resources. Alcohol specialist
services in acute hospitals provide clinician led multidisciplinary
specialist care in the acute hospitals with integrated alcohol
treatment pathways across primary, secondary and social care. Alcohol
specialist services are set up to alleviate the impact of substance
misuse on secondary care by improving care for substance misusing
patients who present to hospitals.

The Alcohol Liaison Nurse will form part of the phased development
towards a 7-day Alcohol Specialist Service for the acute hospitals in
Cork: Cork University Hospital and Mercy University Hospital. The post
is part of a developing partnership between Addiction Services and
Liaison Psychiatry in the region in response to problematic alcohol
use. Such a partnership aims to share resources to maximize efficiency
and reduce the burden of alcohol use among an identified population.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the Area Director of Nursing as relevant to the post / as
appropriate. Accountable to the Assistant Director of Nursing and
Director of Nursing.

The clinical reporting relationship is to the Consultant Psychiatrists
working in the Cork Liaison Psychiatry Service.

PURPOSE OF THE POST

The post will form part of Cork Liaison Psychiatry service providing
collaborative, multidisciplinary, person-centred care with a focus on
health promotion, education, training, audit and research. The post
will improve the acute hospital care of patients with substance abuse
problems directly and indirectly. Direct patient care will be provided
by biopsychosocial assessment and brief intervention with integrated
care into community resources. Indirect patient care be provided by
formal and informal education to acute hospital staff regarding
substance abuse problems, brief intervention, detoxification
medication regimens, and risk management.
