ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

* QQI Level 7 Bachelor of Arts in Applied Social Studies (Disability)
- Open Training College or
* Level 7 award in Social Care/Studies delivered by an Institute of
Technology, DIT or National University of Ireland or
* Other relevant third level social/healthcare qualification may be
considered i.e. Nursing, Psychology, Youth and Community, Social Work,
Social Sciences, Disability Studies
* Knowledge of Person-Centred Planning and implementation of Care
and Case Management
* Excellent report writing and organisational skills
* Demonstrate initiative, good interpersonal and teamwork skills
* Willingness to partake in professional supervision (internal
and/or external)
* Possess a Full Clean Drivers Licence. Requirement to display an
"N" plate is permissible

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position requires a high degree of understanding and commitment to
the residents of Lion Matthew Bourke House, Thurles and those former
residents who now reside in independent accommodation in the greater
Thurles area. The prime consideration, at all times, must be for the
welfare and well-being of our residents/tenants.

The Social Care Worker must have the ability to work with people with
mental health challenges and/or intellectual disability, or recovering
from addiction and at risk of homelessness because of any of these.
The Social Care Worker must believe that the person has the right to
live and participate in the community equally with other people. While
various levels of support will be available, the successful candidate
will, in most cases, be working on their own initiative with the aim
of assisting persons to achieve/maintain independent living.

The successful candidate must be highly responsible and reliable, be
competent in household management and have the ability to create and
maintain a homely and supportive environment.

The position requires the person to have the ability to resolve
conflict and to understand and empower people with sometimes quite
divergent points of view.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* To be responsible for training, assisting, supervising and
monitoring the personal development of residents, and some tenants of
independent housing units in the following areas:-

* Budgeting,
* Laundry,
* Meal planning and preparation,
* Household cleaning,
* Creating shopping lists,
* Shopping,
* Yard and lawn maintenance,
* Interpersonal skills,
* Developing relationships,
* Personal appearance and hygiene,
* Time management,
* Social skills
* Communication skills.

* To assist people supported by Thurles Lions Trust (TLT) to
participate in community events
* To work with people supported by TLT to achieve the agreed targets
of their individual Support and/or Exit Plans.
* To encourage the development of individual friendships and support
each person to share with the other residents and their community
his/her talents, ideas, feelings, desires and aspirations.
* To respond practically to the physical, recreational, leisure,
emotional, cultural and spiritual needs of each resident.
* To foster a spirit of welcome for all who come to Matthew Bourke
House e.g. people supported by the services, their families,
neighbours and guests.
* To hold meetings in the Matthew Bourke House and ensure that
decisions are arrived at in a spirit of co-operation and to empower
people supported by TLT to speak up for themselves and to make their
own decisions and choices.
* To ensure birthdays and days of special importance to the
residents/tenants are celebrated and that special seasonable
celebrations take place.
* To support residents/tenants to arrange annual holidays and
weekend breaks.
* To arrange medical, dental, optical, auditory appointments for
residents/tenants, when required.
* To ensure that residents/tenants monies are accounted for and
recorded as appropriate.
* To maintain Support Plan files and to collect and record relevant
data e.g. personal issues, incident reports, monthly reports and
annual reports.
* To attend meetings as required, including case conferences, house
meetings, supervision and staff meetings.
* To work closely with the staff of other support agencies, TLT
staff members and other colleagues in the organisation.
* To comply with the guidelines, policies and procedures of the
Thurles Lions Trust Housing Association CLG.
* To ensure all fire, health and safety regulations are adhered to.
* To liaise with outside agencies as appropriate.
* To carry out driving duties as required.
* To attend training when required.
* To carry out any other duties as may be assigned to you from time
to time by the Care Manager/Chief Executive.

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE
INDIVIDUALS WHO WE SUPPORT THAT ARE BASED ON RESPECT AND EQUALITY AND
THAT PROMOTE THEIR INDEPENDENCE.
You must hold a Full Clean Driving Licence as you will be required, on
occasions, to be willing and able to drive a vehicle.
