Community Healthcare West (CHW) wishes to contract a researcher, or
team of researchers, to explore the impact of the COVID-**Apply on the
website** pandemic on the health outcomes of the Traveller community
in Community Healthcare West (Galway, Mayo, Roscommon).
This is an open invitation to tender, and all suitably qualified and
experienced researchers or teams of researchers are invited to submit
proposals.
ABOUT GALWAY TRAVELLER MOVEMENT
Galway Traveller Movement CLG was established in **Apply on the

City and County made up of Travellers and non-Travellers. We have
worked for more than two decades to challenge and respond to the
structural inequalities that the Traveller community are subjected to.
GTM aims to address disadvantage, poverty and social exclusion
experienced by the Traveller Community. The company works from a
community development approach to promote equality, the prevention of
discrimination and the protection of the human rights of members of
the Traveller Community at a local (Galway city and county), regional
and national level.
Equality and non-discrimination are fundamental principles of human
rights and critical components of the right to health. Galway
Traveller Movement work across the social determinants of health and
are committed to achieving the right to health for all members of the
Traveller Community.
ABOUT THE TRAVELLER HEALTH UNIT
The Traveller Health Unit in the Community Healthcare West was
established as the Western Health Board Traveller Health Unit in
**Apply on the website** to address the issues of access to and uptake
of health services by members of the Traveller community with a view
to addressing their poor health status and the health inequalities
experienced by them.
The work of the Traveller Health Unit (THU) in the Community
Healthcare West (THU CHW) is underpinned by the social determinants of
health that are at the root of Traveller health inequalities. This
approach enables a holistic approach to health and wellbeing in the
region.
Member organisations of the THU which will also be involved in the
research project including Co Roscommon Traveller Health Project, Mayo
Traveller Support Group, Western Traveller & Intercultural Development
(Tuam), and Galway Traveller Movement.
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
It is well documented that members of the Traveller community face
significant health inequalities compared to their settled peers. The
Traveller community face higher rates of cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, and mental health issues than the general population, with
life expectancy some **Apply on the website**.5 years lower for
Traveller women and **Apply on the website** years lower for Traveller
men than the settled population.
The Traveller community was impacted greatly during the COVID-**Apply
on the website** pandemic. Overcrowded accommodation, digital
disadvantage, high level of underlying health conditions, and ongoing
social exclusion meant that the community were disproportionately
impacted by the COVID-**Apply on the website** pandem1ic. Levels of
transmission in the third wave (end of November to mid-April) in
Galway city and county alone saw **Apply on the website** cases
recorded.
Galway Traveller Movement and the Traveller Health Unit CHW are
concerned about the long-term implications of COVID-**Apply on the
website** on a community already greatly disadvantaged. The research
conducted will assess and assist in future planning for implementing
supports needed to right health inequalities experienced by the
Traveller community.
THE PROPOSAL
Galway Traveller Movement and the THU wishes to commission a competent
and independent researcher / research team to conduct a comprehensive
study to explore the impact and experiences of the Traveller community
in Community Healthcare West during the covid-**Apply on the website**
pandemic.
This research will be a collaborative project, with THU members and
the researchers scoping out the full parameters of study and research
design. THU and the Traveller Health Projects across the region would
also be involved in the drafting of research material ensuring it is
culturally appropriate, accessible, and meets the criteria for the
study.
This research will include the following elements:
* Mapping of relevant existing literature
* Analysis of existing data sets
* Identifying models of best practice for the future
ASSESSMENT OF APPLICANTS
Applicants will be assessed on:
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the challenges
experienced by the Traveller community
* Demonstrated knowledge of the social determinants of health
* Experience in research and relevant methodologies
* Knowledge and experience of working with community development
organisations
* Knowledge and experience of working with health services
* Value for Money
* Good Interpersonal skills to carry out 1:1 interviews/focus groups
* Excellent report writing to prepare and draft a report and present
same to the Traveller Health Unit in Community Healthcare West
Experience of qualitative methods working with marginalised
communities and advantage.
METHODOLOGY
A mixed methods approach is suggested for this project including
consultation with Traveller Health Projects in Galway, Mayo, and
Roscommon, interviews / focus groups with members of the Traveller
community, and consultation with services within the THU / HSE.
TIMEFRAME
The research should be completed by September **Apply on the website**
with submission of the final report. Data collection should take place
between May and July of **Apply on the website**.
BUDGET:
The tender is expected to cover ALL COSTS (consultants travel,
questionnaire design and delivery, etc.), associated with conducting
the research study. All tenders must be submitted in Euros.
Unquantified costs will not be accepted. It is expected that the

standard terms and conditions. This will include conditions such as:
