The Advocacy and Engagement Assistant will play a crucial role in
supporting and developing the advocacy and policy function of NCBI.
Central to this is empowering service users to be involved in advocacy
and ensuring all NCBI policy and recommendations are embedded in the
lives experiences of those living with sight loss. The All duties
within this role will be carried out in compliance with NCBI Vision,
Mission and Values.

_DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_

ADVOCACY PARTICIPATION AND ENGAGEMENT

* To support and mobilise service user participation in the Local
Advocacy Networks (LAN) and National Advocacy Network (NAN).
* To assist in the establishment and running of various LAN meetings
across the country.
* To encourage and support advocates to sit on external committees,
user groups or consultative groups.
* To manage and update database of Advocates and mailing lists.
* To support and inform advocates to participate in other groups and
activities run by NCBI.
* To promote and support advocates to undertake the bespoke
accredited National Advocacy Campaigns Skills Programme.
* To develop new content for the National Advocacy Campaigns Skills
Programme and other informal training sessions when required.
* To keep advocates engaged through drafting regular communications
with them e.g. quarterly Ezine and newsflashes.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

* To assist in the development of NCBI policy submissions by
capturing the views and experiences of people who are blind and vision
impaired to ensure all positions and recommendations are evidence
based.
* To assist in the commissioning or conducting of research to inform
policy developments.
* To respond to research requests from students and other interested
parties as necessary.

CAMPAIGNING

* Assist LAN members to engage in local advocacy campaigns by helping
to develop various appropriate campaigning strategies e.g. stakeholder
mapping.
* Mobilise LAN members to participate in NCBI national advocacy
campaigns by devising and promoting different tactics that can show
their support.

This is not an exhaustive list as additional duties and functions may
need to be carried out in line with the role.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

* Qualification in social policy / equality studies / or something
similar.
* 3+ years? experience in similar role.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work with colleagues across different internal
departments as well as service users and external stakeholders.
* Be a team player and an ability to work on own initiative.
* Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage a
diverse workload.
* Previous experience of working in an area of disability/ illness,
and a general understanding of the not-for-profit sector in Ireland is
desirable but not essential.
