Design Coordinator - Roads - Ireland




Job Description

The role of the design coordinator is to ensure various road/highway projects maintain and achieve the Design Objectives with delivery to a very demanding construction programme.

The Design Coordinator will be a senior member of the project team upon whom other members of the team will rely, to keep the project on-track relative to the agreed design strategy and deliverables programme. 

The role will initially be office based in Dublin before moving with the site team to a project office establishment located close to the site. 

It is envisaged that periods of time working with the designer’s in their own offices will be required as necessary. 



To act as a focal point of contact for all aspects of the design, ensuring professional relationships are developed and maintained with the client and their representatives and stakeholders.

Coordination of the design in accordance with programme, budget and technical requirements.

Chair/attend meetings and workshops with designers.

Record minutes of meetings as required.Prioritise design functions as necessary to achieve construction dates.Maintain an up to date tracker schedule of Design Deliverables.

Monitor design activities against company Quality Management Systems and Designer’s certified Quality Management Plan.

Monitor design outputs for compliance with the tender design, latest version of the Project Design Manual, Schedule 4 Contract Requirements, approved Departures, certified Design Changes and any other requirements specified from time to time by the company Senior Management Team.

Coordinate inputs from the Construction Team and supply chain to ensure no undue delays to design outputs e.g. additional site investigation, procurement of precast designer/fabricator, etc.

Ensure regular and meaningful design review meetings take place.

Ensure design changes are properly recorded, assessed and authorised.

Ensure design risks are recorded.Attendance at design Technical Working Group meetings and providing advice over design issues affecting and informing construction.

Coordinating and providing prompt response to Technical queries and Requests for Information.

Attendance at Design Hazard Log Review meetings, closing out actions as appropriate.

Reviewing and promptly responding to the issue of design documents, drawings, specification appendices, reports etc.

Providing minutes of meetings held and organised by company.

Coordinating and attending relevant meetings with the Designer, Authorities Rep, NRA, County Councils and other third parties as required.

Adherence to the project Design Management System.

Assistance in the production of handover documentation.

Liaison with the Document Controller so that the right people get the right information at the right time.

Monitor the expenditure of designer's fees including: monitoring of the fee impact against variations in the scope & approval of invoices.

Written communication 

Ability to express ideas clearly, in written format, with good grammatical form

IT Skills 

Strong IT skills covering Microsoft packages, Microsoft Project, Primivera, AutoCAD

Tenacity   

Ability to stay with a problem or line of thought until the matter is settled or the objective is no longer reasonably attainable; perseverance

Interpersonal Skills

Awareness of other people and environment and own impact on these. 

Skilled with team members and external clients etc.

Decisiveness

Requirements


A Degree in Civil Engineering is essential with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in major highway design. 

The candidate must have an understanding of design and its application to construction of highway and bridge projects with an appreciation of the DMRB and Specification for Highway Works. 

The candidate must be a good communicator guiding the whole project design team to a coordinated and successful outcome.
