Job Description

Overall managerial responsibility for the operations of a main civils contractor, ensuring that agreed organisational and financial objectives are delivered.

 

Develop and implement a business plan that will facilitate the achievement of organisational and financial objectives of the Company.  Ensure that objectives are set within the plan and that these are effectively communicated within the Company.

 

In order to achieve the overall organisational and financial objectives you will assume responsibility for setting, and controlling budgets, targets and objectives, providing regular reports on progress highlighting variances from these.

 

To ensure targets and objectives within each area of the business are met it is important to ensure good people management practices.  Ensure that the key roles are staffed with people who can effectively undertake their roles in the business, that their roles are clearly defined and understood and all personnel are motivated and developed to achieve the business’s objectives.

 

Coordination of the business development roles within the Company ensuring that the marketing, pricing and sales activities, maximise both the short and long term success of the business. 

 

Involvement with every stage of the business cycle is essential, including the pre-qualification estimating and bid management, commercial management of the project, operations and progress, as well as the completion and final account.

 

Provide a customer focused approach throughout the Company; building and maintaining the contacts necessary for the future development of the business, proactively promoting the Company.

 

Identify and implement the means of maintaining and increasing quality and productivity to maximise outputs and customer satisfaction. 

 

Ensure that all necessary plant and equipment is available to meet the objectives of the Company and that there are schedules are in place for planned preventative maintenance.

 

Assume responsibility for Health and Safety, Quality and Human Resources throughout the operations.

 

Key Relationships:

It is essential that very good relations are established and maintained with the Director. An essential part of this is ensuring that progress on key objectives are regularly relayed to the Director.

 

It is essential that the jobholder build effective working relationships with the management team to ensure all areas are managed and controlled, including Project Managers, Estimator, Sales/Commercial Manager and Technical Manager.

 

As in most successful businesses, very good customer, client and supplier relationships are essential.  This will involve regular contact with customers in the effective operation of contracts, and also in a well-developed corporate entertaining programme.

 

Good relationships with all personnel are essential as this is fundamental to the success of the business.  This includes effective use of our clients personnel in addition to other expert advice and assistance from other disciplines within the Group.

               

Main Challenges:

The ability to translate the Company strategy into a workable business plan for the Region providing detailed targets and objectives for each area of the business. In addition effectively communicate these, motivating and directing all personnel in the business to achieve these.

 

The ability to manage every function within the Region, whilst remaining focused on “the bottom line” and the overall business objectives and strategy.  Overall Company objectives should also be considered, and the Region’s contribution to Company success.

 

Ensuring effective relationships, both internally and externally, are built and maintained in order to meet the short and long-term objectives of the Region and the Company.

 

Working in an environment with a wide variety of “personalities”, ensuring that the needs of the Group remain priority.  Tackle critical issues head-on gaining agreement where necessary.

               

Requirements

10 years experience in a civil engineering environment, preferably with exposure to similar project areas.

At least 5 years senior management experience, and having experience of managerial responsibilities including operations, sales, business development, commercial management and most importantly profitability.

A strong commercial accumen is essential, with an understanding of contractual issues within the civil engineering sector.

Ability to market and promote the  business through strong interpersonal skills and customer awareness.

Understanding of the management principles, including finance, health and safety, quality and HR.

Capacity to manage change – identify problems, their causes and provide practical solutions.

Experience of managing diverse personnel including remote sites, and sub-contractors.  This will include staff motivation and development.

Awareness of business development and strategy implementation
